a serving of sweet dumplings

This sweet dumplings recipe is more assembly than actual cooking. Just wrap peach slices in crescent dough, pour the spiced butter sauce over the top, and drizzle lemon-lime soda around the edges of the pan. Then let the oven work its magic – baking the fruit dumplings until golden, tender, and bubbling with flavor.

The result is pure comfort: juicy peaches tucked inside flaky pastry, surrounded by a rich, syrupy sauce with warm spices and a hint of caramel. Don’t forget to spoon any extra sauce over the dessert dumplings, or your ice cream! What are peach dumplings?

Peach Dumplings are a comforting summer dessert and a delicious twist on classic peach cobbler. Quick to make and full of warm, spiced flavor – the perfect way to showcase fresh, juicy peaches.

Each crescent roll is wrapped around a peeled peach slice and baked until golden brown in a rich butter sauce made with cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and a splash of lemon-lime soda. It’s a simple recipe – but don’t let that fool you. These dessert dumplings are irresistibly good.

ingredients to make Peach Dumplings

Ingredients needed to make Peach Dumplings

  • Refrigerated crescent rolls: These create a buttery, flaky crust around each peach slice with minimal effort and no homemade dough required. You can use store-brand or name-brand dough. Puff pastry or biscuit dough could also work.
  • Peaches: Juicy and ripe peaches are the star of this dessert. If fresh peaches aren’t in season, you can use well-drained canned or frozen peach slices instead. Just be sure to pat them dry to prevent sogginess.
  • Butter: This adds rich, indulgent flavor to the sauce and helps the dumplings bake up golden and caramelized. I always use unsalted butter in baking, but you could use salted butter if you prefer a touch of salt to balance out the sweetness in this dish.
  • Granulated sugar: Sweetens the sauce and helps create that irresistible syrupy glaze around each dumpling. You can reduce the sugar slightly if your peaches are extra sweet. Swap in a mix of brown sugar for a deeper, molasses-like flavor.

  • Vanilla extract: Adds warm, aromatic depth to the sauce that enhances the peachy flavor.
  • Almond extract: Just a splash gives this peach dumpling recipe a subtle nutty note that pairs beautifully with the peaches. If you don’t have almond extract, you can leave it out or replace it with extra vanilla.
  • Ground cinnamon: Brings cozy, spiced warmth that complements the fruit and buttery dough. Feel free to adjust the amount to suit your taste or add a pinch of pumpkin pie spice for a fall-inspired twist.
  • Nutmeg: A pinch of nutmeg adds a slightly earthy, aromatic complexity to the sauce. You can omit it if you don’t have any, or grate fresh nutmeg for an even bolder flavor.
  • Lemon-lime soda: I’ve found Sprite, 7-Up, or Mountain Dew to be great options for this recipe. It helps to create a bubbling, caramel-like golden sauce around the peach dumplings and gives the fruit dumplings a light and fluffy texture.
  • Ice cream (optional): A scoop of vanilla ice cream melts into the warm dumplings. You can also try whipped cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Sandy’s tips and substitutions:

  • Storage: These dumplings are best enjoyed freshly baked. If you do have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
  • Reheat: Microwave (cover first) for about one minute. For a better texture (more crispy), bake for about 15 minutes at 350 degrees.
  • Make ahead: Prepare this dish ahead of time up to the point of adding the butter sugar sauce topping and soda. Assemble the dumplings, cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate. When you’re ready to bake, simply add the sauce, pour in the soda, and pop it in the oven!
  • Canned or frozen peaches: You can use canned or frozen peach slices for these dumplings. Make sure that you drain the canned peaches well and thaw the frozen peach slices well. You should also pat them dry to prevent excess moisture which can result in soggy dough.
  • Fruity twist: Fresh blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, mixed berries, or apple slices are delicious alternatives to peach slices. Check out my Strawberry Dumplings and Blueberry Dumplings recipes here.
  • Soda: Lemon-lime soda is a popular choice for peach dumplings recipe, but you can use ginger ale or even cream soda for a fun twist.

  • Topping: For extra sweetness and crunch, drizzle a powdered cinnamon sugar glaze over the warm peach dumplings and sprinkle with finely sliced almonds.
  • Filling: Spread store-bought or homemade peach jam over each unrolled crescent triangle before wrapping the peach slices. This will provide a delicious gooey center with an extra boost of sweet peach flavor.
  • Cool the dumplings: The dumplings will be very hot when removed from the oven. Allow them to sit for 10 minutes so that you avoid any burnt mouths!
  • Switch up the spices: Cinnamon and nutmeg are an all-time favorite spice combination. That said, cinnamon also pairs beautifully with cardamom. Add a pinch of pumpkin pie spice for a fall-inspired twist.
  • Prevent soggy dumplings: Only pour the soda around the edges of the baking dish and not over the rolls to prevent sogginess.
  • Grease the pan: Always grease the baking dish (with butter or nonstick spray) to keep your dumplings from sticking to the pan.
