What is a hot dog board?

A hot dog board is the ultimate shareable feast. Grilled sausages are nestled into soft, fresh buns, then finished with a generous drizzle of ketchup, mustard, relish, or any toppings your heart desires. The finished hot dogs are arranged around the perimeter of a large board, creating a mouthwatering frame for the star of the show: a creamy, tangy potato salad placed proudly in the center.

From there, the board becomes a blank canvas for your favorites. Fill the remaining space with bowls of vibrant fresh fruit, savory dips, crunchy chips, and any other bite-sized finger foods that make the meal your own.

Why you’ll love this hot dog board

  • I like making this hot dog board because you can do so much of the prep work ahead of time.
  • It’s perfect for a pool party, summer kids’ party, soccer party, or just because.
  • Easily customizable. Load your board with your favorite dips, chips, and finger foods.

Ingredients needed to make an epic hot dog board

  • Hot dogs – This includes the buns, hot dogs, and all the toppings (ketchup, mustard, thinly sliced red onion, and green relish)
  • Fruit salad – Watermelon, grapes, strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries.
  • Potato salad – Make your own potato salad or use a store-bought potato salad for convenience.
  • Fillers – Add your favorite dips and potato chips. I love to use ranch dip and guacamole.

Sandy’s tips and substitutions:

  • Storage: Leftover fruit, chips, and dips must be stored in separate air tight containers. While leftover chips can be stored at room temperature, fresh ingredients or those with any creamy elements must be stored in the fridge. Don’t store the assembled board in the fridge as the crisp chips and soft buns will get stale.
  • Bright summer colors: For a prettier board, stick to bright, summer dips and toppings and make sure to fill any gaps with extra chips and snacks.
  • Texture and flavors of chips: Use an assortment of your favorite chips. If your dips are thick and chunky, like this Carolina Caviar or Chipotle BLT Dip, then you need chips or crackers that can hold up to the dips. Look for kettle-cooked chips, pita chips or even Fritos over regular potato chips which are prone to breaking in heavier dips. Flavored chips are great for mild dips while neutral-flavored chips are best with bolder dips.
  • Make things easier for yourself: When planning this hot dog board, try to make things easier on yourself by including food items that can be prepared ahead (like making or buying your potato salad), so you’re not stuck in the kitchen when everyone else is having fun!
  • To keep the food hot: Get everything ready ahead of time, add the hot dogs straight from the grill, and serve!
  • Cleanup: Don’t forget the napkins when serving this hot dog board. Things can get messy when you’re enjoying your food this much!

Variations:

  • Gluten-free chip and dip platter: Use gluten-free buns and chips. Always check the ingredients of store-bought dips and potato salad to ensure your board is gluten-free!
  • Crackers: You can replace chips with buttery Ritz crackers, seeded crackers, Graham crackers, rye or pumpernickel crackers, herbed crackers, or flavor-infused crackers.
  • Holiday/theme twist: Easily adapt this hot dog board for any occasion. You can go Mexican, with Jalapeno Popper DipCorn & Chorizo Dip and a variety of tortilla chips. Or, go Italian with pita crackers, veggies, and dips like Pesto White Bean Dip and Whipped Ricotta Dip.
  • Toppings: It’s optional to drizzle the mustard or ketchup (or you can let everyone do it themselves). You can also alternate some with ketchup and mayo, or just ketchup, or just mustard. Mix ‘em up!
